Track 1: Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is a serious medical disorder that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. As methods to regulator body fat directly are difficult, the diagnosis of obesity is often based on Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measure used to determine childhood overweight and obesity. Overweight is well-defined as a BMI at or above the 85th percent and below the 95th percent for children and teens of the same age and sex. Obesity is definite as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex.

Food policy is the area of public policy concerning how food is produced, processed, distributed, and purchased. Many Childhood Obesity prevention Strategies and policies have been proposed to counter obesity and some of those proposed policies focus on altering the food system to influence dietary habits and thus obesity and nutrition by changing the choices available to consumers or by changing the incentives to choose. To reverse the obesity epidemic, places and practices need to support healthy eating and active living. The past few decades have brought lifestyle changes throughout the world that have resulted in children having reduced physical activity and increased caloric intake. The amount of time that children spend playing outside has diminished during the past few decades and physical education, nutrition education programs in schools have been reduced or eliminated. Living a sedentary lifestyle, children are spending more time watching television and playing on computers than exercising. Both physical activity and nutrition-focused interventions are already in place in many primary schools. Self-monitoring, increasing sports and physical activity are few of the psychological and behaviour change strategies to treat the disease of obesity either alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

Childhood obesity is a serious medical disorder that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. The Mind-Body Connection was a hands-on, interactive experience supporting current clinical research and the works of practitioners on traditional East Asian movement techniques. It covered associations between the mind, body and the importance of integrating a holistic approach to reach optimal levels of fitness, thereby impacting levels of obesity. The workshop reviewed breathing techniques, beginning movement methods, and the promotion of a positive and non-judgmental environment. The methods were taken from personal experience of teaching movement based practices since 2004 successfully.
